ROAR! Dinosaurs are uniquely amusing to kids and adults of all ages. Many attractions in Kansas (and nearby) have created places for children to come and learn about dinosaurs.
Dinosaur Attractions in Kansas and Beyond
Science City (Kansas City)
Science City has a section of the building dedicated to dinosaurs. You are able to see the eggs and fossils at the dinosaur lab. Children are able to handle real fossils and examine them closer using a microscope. Next to the lab there is a dino dig complete with brushes, shovels, and goggles to find the next undiscovered dinosaur bones.
Museum at Prairiefire (Overland Park)
The Museum at Prairiefire is gorgeous with its stained glass windows and gold throughout. Which makes it easy to find and stand out against the buildings near it. Once inside T-rex greets any visits along with a few other skeleton bones to view and read about. Upstairs there is a children’s area for children to manipulate and play with everything from putting bones together, a dig site, learning about Pangea, and so much more.
Before you leave make sure to create your own dinosaur. Located downstairs across from the T-rex visitors are able to follow the computers prompts and design a dinosaur. Once completed wait a minute and you will see the new dinosaurs come onto a screen with a live feed of where you are standing. The dinosaur walks and flies with you.
KU Natural History Museum (Lawrence)
At the KU Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, you will be transported back to the past. You can gaze at all the wonderful exhibit set up on multiple different floors. You can explore a dinosaur that used to roam around Kansas on the third floor as well as seeing a mosasaur, plesiosaur, and many more! Going up to the fourth floor you can visit many different habitats on the planet. While on the fourth floor grab a discovery guide or scavenger hunt forms to fill out to help guide the adventure. The fifth floor is an interactive area where you can look and touch while exploring evolution, conservation and diversity. On the top floor is where you can explore everything from the smallest electrons, microbes, insects, amphibians, to larger animals.
Prehistoric Putt (Independence, Mo.)
Just across the state line, Prehistoric Putt is EXTREME mini golf. The golf course is lined with dinosaur hazards that you have to putt around. Not only are dinosaurs roaming the course, you have to try to make a shot while moving on a zipline. It has a slingshot that you start your shot off by using. They have two courses for kids and one adult one course for an extra challenge. Don’t forget to spin the wheel before some holes, to add extra difficulty to your level! Every hole is different and unique, you have to see it to believe it.
Field Station Dinosaur (Derby)
