While it may not boast beaches or mountains, Hays, Kansas, might be the perfect destination for your next family getaway! Home of the Fort Hays State Tigers, a dinosaur museum, and all the small-town vibes, Hays is only two and a half hours west of the Little Apple on I-70.
Stops on your way to Hays
Highlighted in our Rolling Hills Zoo Guide, this zoo is a wonderful addition to any westbound trip. The perfect chance to get some wiggles out before your final destination! If a shorter detour is needed, Russell Stover Chocolates right off exit 272 might be just the thing. Make sure to check out their selection of “bloopers,” or imperfect chocolate goodies, because somehow, they taste even better.
Family Friendly Hays Attractions

Sternberg Museum of Natural History
Dinosaur loving toddlers and grownups alike will appreciate a trip to Sternberg! Our two-year-old was entertained for over an hour but was slightly more skittish with the dinos compared to her first visit a few months ago. Some other highlights include a rattlesnake exhibit (with tons of live snakes), many taxidermy animal friends, and fossils galore.

Fort Hays State University (and the Bison Herd!)
Even a diehard K-Stater can appreciate the beauty of the FHSU campus. If a lovely campus walk isn’t as exciting to some, near campus in Frontier Park is a small bison herd cared for by the Hays Parks Department. If you’re lucky, you may spot a few brand-new calves during the spring season. We opted to just drive by and wave at the bison this time!
Toddler Tip: A cake pop from the Starbucks in the FHSU Student Union makes campus way more fun!

Anyone who has traveled with children understands the importance of letting them run around and burn some energy. We were pleasantly surprised with the playgrounds and parks! The ARC Park was a favorite and extremely toddler friendly.
We attend weekly story time at the Manhattan Public Library, but I have never included it as part of our vacations. My toddler was excited to explore the Hays Public Library and it was wonderful to have a less stimulating aspect of our day.

An unexpected highlight of our trip: bowling! My two-year-old played an entire game without losing interest. Centennial Lanes has the jazzy carpet you should expect from a bowling alley, sixteen lanes, and such a friendly atmosphere.
Toddler Tip: Use the “helper dinosaur” to let your kiddo nearly beat you in bowling!
Where to Eat in Hays
Hays might not be a culinary hot spot, but I certainly have favorites that are worth visiting.
Gella’s Diner and LB Brewery
A wide variety of classic options, including a smothered bierock and giant burgers. We are never disappointed (or hungry) after dining here.
Taco Shop
Perhaps it is just a good memory for me, but if you need predictable tacos, nachos, etc., this is the place for your family! Taco shop is extremely kid friendly, minimally spicy, and general good vibes.
Thirsty’s Brew Pub and Grill
A gigantic building with lots of things to look at and an equally expansive menu!
Guiterrez
Sit down, family-friendly Tex-Mex. Bring on the chips!
Golden Q
More of a bar atmosphere, head to the Golden Q for traditional burgers, sandwiches, and classic appetizers.
Seasonal Recommendations in Hays
Over the summer, enjoy the Hays Aquatic Park or a splash pad to cool off.
Additionally, FHSU puts on various rodeos and holiday activities. Check out the Hays Event Calendar to plan your visit.
A whirlwind 36 hours out west was the perfect getaway during a busy season of life. I would absolutely recommend a trip to Hays as a laid back and affordable family outing!
