Visiting the Museum of Art + Light with Kids: A Family Guide in Manhattan, KS
Looking for a family outing that’s educational, interactive, and fun for all ages? Whether you’re trying to beat the Kansas heat, escape a rainy afternoon, or simply spend quality time together, the Museum of Art + Light is one of our favorite family-friendly destinations in Manhattan.
At first glance, an art museum might not seem like the obvious choice for young children but don’t let that fool you. Between hands-on art activities, interactive exhibits, immersive digital experiences, and creative spaces designed with families in mind, there’s something to capture the imagination of every age.
We’ve found that having a game plan makes all the difference, so here’s exactly how we’d recommend exploring the museum with kids.
Start on Level 3

As tempting as it is to begin on the first floor, our biggest tip is to head straight to the top.
One of our kids’ favorite exhibits is the incredible Matchbox car collection and it’s the perfect way to grab their attention right away.
When we visited last, the children’s activity area on the third floor is in the same room as the Matchbox car collection. Depending on the current exhibits, you’ll often find hands-on art projects where kids can create artwork inspired by what they’re seeing throughout the museum. Check the website prior to your visit if you want to ensure there is a hands-on art project for kids.

After the craft projects, we were able to visit amazing 3D art that we spent over an hour playing with! At one point my husband had to come and find my son and I and we were still in the same exact spot! One thing we love about the Museum of Art + Light is that it encourages children to interact with art rather than simply walk past it. The hands-on activities invite curiosity, creativity, and conversation.
Take a Snack Break at Café Azul
Before heading downstairs, stop for a quick break at Café Azul.
This is the perfect time to grab a coffee, enjoy a pastry or snack, and let everyone recharge before continuing your visit. The seating area also offers beautiful views overlooking the Kaw River Valley. My kids really enjoyed looking out the windows and seeing the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Even if your kids don’t think they’re hungry yet, we’ve found this is the perfect midway break before little feet start slowing down.
Explore Level 2
Next, head down to the second floor.
Here you’ll discover another family-friendly creative space where kids can continue making art while parents enjoy exploring the surrounding galleries. Parents are required to stay in the art zones so my husband and I found it was easiest to take turns going to look at the art since our children where well into the 2nd hour at the museum at this point with all of the projects they could make!
Because exhibits rotate throughout the year, every visit offers something new to discover.
Finish with the Immersive Experience
Save the first floor for last.
The immersive gallery is unlike anything else in Manhattan. Towering digital projections, moving artwork, music, and light surround you, creating an experience that’s just as magical for adults as it is for kids.
Don’t be surprised if your children sit on the floor beanbags, dance along with the projections, or point out new details each time the artwork changes. We were not prepared for our children to spend over and hour in here but between the dancing and the watching, we were all having a blast. At one point, I leaved over to my husband and said this felt like a family date instead of a family trip. Ending your visit here among the lights and music feels like the perfect grand finale.
Final Thoughts
Would We Visit Again? Absolutely! The rotating exhibits, hands-on activities, and immersive experiences make every visit feel a little different. The Museum of Art + Light has quickly become one of our favorite family outings in Manhattan.
It’s the kind of place where children are encouraged to explore, ask questions, create, and experience art in their own unique way. Parents can appreciate the incredible exhibits while kids stay engaged through interactive activities and immersive experiences, making it a win for the whole family.
Whether you’re planning a weekend adventure, looking for a rainy-day activity, or searching for a fun way to introduce your kids to art, the Museum of Art + Light deserves a spot on your family’s Manhattan bucket list.
