Museum Exhibits

Begin your visit by checking in with the front desk attendant. When we went, the attendant was friendly and happy to chat about the museum’s history (it used to be a post office, how cool!). She pointed out some key things to look for, provided information on how to tour the museum to get the most out of our time, and noted the specific items our crew can touch.

Permanent exhibits include The Main Exhibit Gallery, The Curiosity Shop, and Prairie Education Lab. There is also a rotating exhibit that is always interesting and fun to check out. Our favorite part about this museum was how interactive and family-friendly it was! My crew spent a lot of time in The Curiosity Shop area. My two-year-old loved the giant Lite Brite and blocks, while my 5 and 7 year olds enjoyed the weather and tornado area. We also had a ton of fun in the radio recording studio and exploring the one-room pioneer house.

If you would like a guided tour for a group, please book ahead and contact the museum to make reservations.

Museum Store

Before the end of your visit, don’t forget to check out the Museum Store and grab a souvenir to remember your visit! The store is filled with unique Kansas merchandise, including an extensive collection of books and pieces done by local artists. There’s a wide array of items at affordable prices. And the best part is you’ll feel good about your purchase because the store generates revenue to support the exhibits and programs of the Smoky Hill Museum. Mom Tip

Plan to check out the beautiful murals nearby and grab lunch (and a beer!) at Blue Skye Brewery and Eats.
