Home Depot Kids Workshops are a delightful blend of expressing creativity, learning tool safety, and risking having your fingers smashed by your hammer-wielding child. They are an easy-going opportunity to pencil in a recurring outing that can work for your whole family or as a one-on-one activity. Mark your calendars for the next one!
When are the workshops?
Home Depot Kids Workshops take place from 9 a.m. to noon in-store on the first Saturday of every month, plus an extra holiday workshop that takes place around Thanksgiving (this year, it’s November 29, 2025).
In Manhattan, the workshops are set up in aisle 21 at the back of the store. When the weather is particularly nice, they sometimes happen right outside the main entrance.
If you can’t make it during the scheduled time, any leftover kits are taken to customer service following the workshop and can be picked up there.
What are the projects?
See the 2025 project schedule here, which includes a toucan mobile, excavator, teddy bear ornament and more.
Note that the sample projects on the schedule have been extensively painted. Your project will start with plain wood, and the kits frequently have stickers for the main design features. The Manhattan Home Depot sometimes has paint available for use in store.
How much does it cost?
These projects are completely free! Each kit contains the wood pieces and any necessary nails, screws and stickers. Hammers, screwdrivers and glue are available for use in-store. The kits also feature ideas for expanded activities and a collectible pin.
Kids can also get a free orange apron; ask for one at any workshop. Some kids wear their aprons while they work, but it’s not required. Ours hangs in our son’s room and we use it for displaying his pins.
Can I reserve a project?
Project kits are only available while supplies last. Filling out the online registration form at homedepot.com/kids does NOT guarantee you a kit.
I have heard secondhand that some stores do require advance registration (Manhattan does not), so if you’re going to be traveling and want to visit another location, you might want to call ahead and ask about that.
Who can attend Home Depot Workshops?
The suggested age range is 5-12, but younger children are welcome to participate. My almost five year old loves these workshops but definitely needs adult help to complete the projects, while we often see older kids working more independently.
Do I have to build it in-store?
Nope, you can absolutely take your project kit home! We’ve even had family members pick up an extra for us if we’re out of town. If you choose to take it home, you’ll need to provide a hammer and screwdriver. The projects sometimes call for glue, but personally, we rarely use it, and it hasn’t caused any issues.
Mom Tip
These workshops can get really LOUD. The thundering of many enthusiastically pounding tiny hammers can be a bit much even for my adult self. Consider bringing headphones or taking the kit home if you think the noise level will be an issue for your family.
