Volunteering with Kids in Manhattan this Holiday Season

0

The holidays are a magical time of giving, and there’s no better way to embrace the spirit of the season than by volunteering. Donating your time and resources to those in need can greatly improve the lives of those in your own community. It also can provide valuable lessons and perspectives to children who may not understand the impact of serving the community until they see and experience it firsthand.

Several organizations around Manhattan provide wonderful opportunities  to volunteer with kids while giving to those in need this holiday season.

Best Places to Volunteer with Kids in Manhattan This Holiday Season

Flint Hills Breadbasket

The Flint Hills Breadbasket welcomes volunteers of all ages to help sort and distribute food donations, or assist with season-specific needs. During the holidays, they often run special events like Thanksgiving or Christmas meal distributions, making it a perfect opportunity for kids to see the direct impact of their efforts.

Good Shepherd Homecare & Hospice

Mission: Providing compassionate care for individuals with serious illnesses.

Families can brighten someone’s holiday by delivering homemade cards, baked goods, or small gifts to be distributed to patients in hospice care. This is a touching way for kids to spread joy and learn empathy. Call ahead to their office to discuss age-appropriate ways your family can participate.

Konza United Way

Mission: Providing services so that everyone has the chance to lead a healthy, productive and meaningful life.

The Konza United Way often needs help sorting and securing donated items. These items go directly to those who are in need in our community. This is the perfect activity for tweens or teens who can handle time on their feet and moving larger items.

The Magdalene Project

Mission: Assisting community members in securing the basic items needed to live a life of dignity & aid them in transitioning to a better life by obtaining health/mental care, employment, VA resources, housing and life skills.

The Magdalene Project is a local nonprofit organization that provides free meals on Sunday. They also work with the homeless and provide hygiene items, clothing and general assistance. Volunteers are needed to help serve the Sunday lunch, as well as sorting, packaging, and handing out donated items. All ages welcome, but children must be supervised at all times.

Manhattan Emergency Shelter, Inc. (MESI)

MESI appreciates individuals and families who would like to provide home cooked meals to those who are struggling to find food. What a perfect, hands-on way for kids to connect with the importance of supporting others! Meal donations are accepted seven days a week, between the hours of 8 AM and 8 PM. Families can also organize a holiday drive to collect warm clothing or personal care items for residents.

Manhattan Parks and Rec

Mission: Maintaining public green spaces across Manhattan.

Parks and Rec loves when small groups want to help with trash/debris clearing, trail maintenance and leaf pick up. Organize a group of friends and neighbors or call on your local scout group or sports team to exemplify the importance of respecting our Earth and its precious resources.

Riley County Humane Society

Mission: Finding homes for homeless pets and promoting responsible pet ownership.

Kids who love animals will enjoy helping with pet adoption events or making DIY toys and blankets for animals in foster care. Teaching compassion for animals ties beautifully into the spirit of giving during the holidays.

Sunset Zoo Holiday Events

Mission: Inspiring conservation and education through wildlife experiences.

Sunset Zoo often hosts holiday themed events, like decorating the zoo or making treats for the animals. Kids love being close to nature, and these activities are both fun and meaningful. They accept volunteers year-round, and have varying programs based on age (beginning at age 10), including summer camps and Junior Zookeeper programs.

USO Kansas

Volunteers can greet service members, assist patrons with checking into the center, stuffing care packages, tidying the center, serving food, or helping with special events. Those 10 and older are welcome to help!

Manhattan Community Holiday Events

Manhattan often hosts city-wide events that rely on volunteers, such as the lighted holiday parade, tree lighting ceremony or community dinners. These events are fantastic for families because they blend service with festive fun. Kids can help set up decorations, serve food or hand out programs. Follow local event pages, such as the Downtown Manhattan Facebook page, or check with the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department.

Tips for Volunteering with Kids

  • Choose age appropriate tasks. Look for activities that match your child’s age and abilities to keep them engaged and excited.
  • Talk about the experience. Discuss why volunteering is important and how it helps others.
  • Plan ahead. Many organizations require advance notice for family volunteers, especially during busy holiday seasons.

With so many incredible opportunities in Manhattan, your family can spread joy, learn valuable lessons and truly embody the spirit of the season. Happy Holidays, and happy volunteering!
