The Manhattan letters are iconic in Manhattan, Kansas, but the Bluemont Scenic Overlook gives you a chance to explore the sign up close. The scenic overlook is off Ehlers Road, and offers impressive views of the Manhattan area.
History of the Manhattan Sign
The MANHATTAN sign was constructed on Bluemont Hill in 1927 by the Manhattan Kiwanis Club. The letters, constructed of concrete, are 30 feet tall and 2 1/2 feet wide. In 2019, the club raised funds to install a ADA-compliant scenic overlook platform. The club is now proposing a second overlook that would include a picnic shelter and views Kansas State University.
Directions
Access via Car
The letters can be access off Ehlers Road and Bluemont Scenic Drive. A parking lot is available with easy access to the short trail leading to the overlook platform. Once you reach the parking lot, head toward the Manhattan water tower. Follow the path, and you will find the overlook and narrow trail that runs right above the letters.
Access via Hiking Trail
The letters can also be accessed via a hiking trail that begins at 4th and Thurston streets. Be aware that this trail has sharp inclines and uneven path terrain.
Points of Interest
When you reach the overlook, you’ll find an information panel that gives a brief history of Bluemont Hill and the Manhattan letters.
On your way around the water tower, you’ll also find a plaque marking the spot where the Steamboat Hartford landed at the confluence of the Blue and Kansas rivers. This eventually lead to the founding of the city of Manhattan.
